While you can always use your smartphone to access Facebook's mobile site, many smartphone users find it easier to use Facebook apps, or applications. Facebook offers its official app on a wide variety of phones, so if you have a smartphone, you can probably use the Facebook app. We'll take a look at the Facebook app on two of the most common smartphone platforms: the iPhone and Android.
Facebook for iPhone
To Get the Facebook for iPhone App:
- On your iPhone, open the App Store.
- Search for the Facebook App. To make sure that you get the official Facebook App, select the result that simply says, "Facebook."
- Press the Free button to download the App at no cost.
- On the iPhone home screen, locate and press the Facebook icon to open the app.
- Enter your email address and Facebook password to log in.
Navigating with Facebook for iPhone
When you log in, you will be taken to your News Feed. Here, you can read and comment on your Friends' posts, or post a photo, status update, or check in.
Press the Menu icon in the top left corner to view the main menu, where you can find more features.
Doing More with Facebook for iPhone
While you can do everything on the Facebook app that you can do in your browser, there are a few features that are especially useful on your phone. For instance, you can use your phone's camera to instantly upload a photo orvideo, and you can use the Check In feature to share something about your current location.
To Upload a Photo or Video:
- From the News Feed, select Photo.
- Select Take Photo or Video to take and upload a new image, or Choose From Library to use one already on your phone. In this example, we'll take a new photo.
- Using the camera built into your iPhone, take the photo or video. When you're satisfied with your photo, select Use.
- If you wish to add a description to the photo, press Write a Caption.... When you're ready to post the photo, press Upload.
- The photo or video will be posted on your Wall and added to your uploads. It will also appear on your Friends' News Feeds.
Checking In With Facebook Places
The Check In feature allows you to share information about your current location using Facebook Places. Due to privacy concerns, we don't recommend using the Check In feature often. However, it's fine to use it occasionally to promote a place or share the location of something fun or interesting.
For information about privacy settings for Facebook Places,
To Check In To a Location:
- From the News Feed, select Check In.
- If this is your first time using this feature, your phone will ask you if Facebook can use your current location. If you feel comfortable with making that information public, select OK.
- Select your current location. You may have to search for it first.
- If desired, add a description of what you're doing, or tag Friends to check them in, too. Before tagging Friends, make sure that they feel comfortable with revealing their location
- Press Check In.
- If you've never posted a Check In before, you'll have to confirm that Facebook has your permission to post your Check In. You are also giving Facebook your permission to let Friends tag you in their own Check Ins. To allow this, select Agree.
- Your Check In will be posted on your Wall and on your Friends' News Feeds.
Facebook for Android
To Get the Facebook for Android App:
- On your phone, open the Android Market.
- Search for the Facebook App. Select Facebook for Android to download the official App.
- Press the Free button to download the App at no cost.
- Press OK to authorize the App to be installed on your phone.
- On the Android home screen, locate and press the Facebook icon to open the app.
- Enter your email address and Facebook password to log in.
